2023 Family News

Where are the Gardners?

Greg and Martha still live in San Jose - since 1989 - 30 miles south of San Francisco and seven miles from where the 49ers play football in Santa Clara. SAP Center is about the same distance away; the Sharks are having a tough year. 😞

Caroline and Jesus live in Sunnyvale - five miles away from us.

Joanna and Brett live in San Diego - 500 miles south of San Francisco.

Ruth and Josh live in Costa Mesa/OC (Orange County) - 425 miles south of San Francisco.

Greg/Martha update

Greg is now retired. It was supposed to start January 1st. His WeVideo sales territory was divided up...all was set for the transition...then one of the sales people quit. The question: "Do you think you could come back until we fill the position?" It took a little over a month to do so. It gave Greg one more trip to TCEA, the Texas education conference, to say goodbye to many customers/friends and to help train the new sales rep for a few days. Greg isn't fully retired. He is working 2-3 days a month as an associate (wine pourer/host) at Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards. It gives him an opportunity to keep his sales skills sharp. The paycheck, wine discount etc are good to have.

And Greg is still waiting for that hole-in-one. He plays golf once a week - plus a few practice sessions at a nearby course or in the backyard. Someday. Maybe. 😎

We jetted down to OC in early January for a quick visit and to attend Ruth's baby shower. Much fun....except Vivi took a hard fall. Poor babe! She recovered quickly. Yay! We came home to a sick dog unfortunately. Rosie left us on the 12th. She is missed.

We left San Jose 2/14 for a trip to the East Coast. While we were boarding the Southwest flight, we learned that Isla Louise Muldoon entered the world! Grandkiddo #5. Congrats to Ruth and Josh! Our travels took us to Georgia for a visit/mini-Eastern Illinois University reunion in Georgia hosted by Mark/Terri Decker. So much fun! Then Martha and Greg drove to Panama City, FL to visit one of Martha's grade school friends. Many happy memories were shared. Then we took a longer drive to Venice, FL for the annual Cornjerkers Reunion hosted by Ray and Suellen Smith. Sue is my sister. Good weather, good times with many of Greg's high school friends.

In March, Greg and Martha went to see the Cubs at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ with Greg's golf buddy Joe and friends. Greg and Joe got a couple of rounds of golf in between games. The guys saw the Cubs win one and lose one. Spring Training was a precursor to the 2023 season - .500 baseball at best. Next year. 😞 On the way to and from AZ, we were able to stop by Costa Mesa/OC to see Ruth and Josh and to personally meet baby Isla. She is SO cute!

A quiet April was followed by a family celebration for Martha's 65th birthday in May. All the girls came home for a fun weekend including mom-daughter time followed by a family birthday dinner celebration at Il Fornaio. The next Friday we celebrated again with friends at Shadowbrook in Capitola. You only turn 65 once, right? Party on!

In June, Greg and Martha made a North Carolina-focused Silcox family visit. The journey started with a visit to Jim and Bonnie Silcox and their crew of five kiddos in Linden. They live in a beautiful farm house with acres of land and an adjacent pond plus an army of ducks, rabbits etc. A kid's paradise! It was pretty cool to hang out with them. Then we made a brief drive to Clinton to hang out with Michael and Davina Silcox and blended family. Their home is wooded and beautiful. A fun visit! Then we drove to Asheville for some personal time. The main attraction was a visit to the Biltmore estate, the larger private residence in the USA - a must see if you get to central NC. And Greg made a special visit to the #2 donut shop in the USA. We have the #8 shop close by - our local shop is better IMO. :) The visit concluded with a visit with Martha's mother Sue and brother John. Sue is well taken care of in a beautiful retirement center while John has his own peaceful slice of heaven in rural Morganton which is near Charlotte. What a wonderful trip! Then we came home and enjoyed seeing someone else paint our house. That's a peaceful feeling. :)

In July, Martha and Greg flew to Albany, NY to spend a week with friends on a beautiful organic farm in eastern New York state. Martha and Sandy (Arnold) grew up together while in the Buffalo area. We got plenty of rest and relaxation - and amazing meals - and we put in a little work on Pleasant Valley Farm as needed. Greg was never cut out to be a farm boy - it was obvious. Looking for a new challenge? PVF is looking for an assistant manager. And a visit to Vermont is always the big event. (inside joke - hi Paul and Sandy).

August is a big birthday month. Mine was low key; I know many of you older folks have given up on birthdays completely. :) We did celebrate Jesus' and Dustin's birthday on the 26th. It was great to have Ruth, Josh, and baby Isla join us.

Greg and Martha celebrated their 40th anniversary in September by traveling to the Port Ludlow Inn on the edge of scenic Puget Sound in Washington. It used to be a lumber mill town. Now it's a quiet, little retirement community with two restaurants, a marina, and a golf course. Did Greg get some golf in? You bet ya! :) Both enjoyed the peace and beautiful weather plus some local sightseeing. We also attended a tasty winemaker's dinner at the resort plus a visit from one of the groomsmen from our wedding that lived in the area - thanks Don and Mia for joining us! Don, play more golf! :) Later in the month, we took a quick trip to San Diego to visit Joanna, Brett, and our granddaughters. Flexibility is one huge benefit of retirement.

In October, Martha traveled to the East Coast to enjoy a yearly gathering she has with some high school girl buddies; the gang goes by "the '76 Chicks." They've been gathering for over 20 years for a long girls weekend. Since she was out East, she also flew down to NC to visit with her mother and brother. Later in the month, good friends Maury and Corene Vaillancourt stopped for a quick visit on their way from Australia back to their home in Florida. Much fun! We will return the visit with them in February, 2024.

To close out the year, we flew down to OC to join Ruth and Josh (and Josh's aunt/uncle Sheila/Roger) to view the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade after a wonderful dinner at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. Very elegant! Not too many yacht clubs in Illinois that Greg can remember. :) We enjoyed the parade a second time when Joanna and the girls came to Newport Beach for a quick visit. Then it was time to drive back to San Jose to prepare for Christmas dinner at our home.

What a wonderful year!

Daughter update

Caroline and Jesus have two kiddos. Dustin turned five in August and has started kindergarten in a bilingual school. Tayla turns two in April, 2024 and loves learning from her big brother. Caroline works for a public accounting firm. Jesus runs his own web marketing business. Need help with WordPress? 😊

Joanna and Brett have two kiddos. Brooke turned eight in August - so hard to believe...she went from 5 to 8...boom! - and is in 2nd grade at a bilingual school. She is an organizer. She always has ideas what we can do. Vivi will turn five in January, 2024 and attends the same school. She follows Brooke most of the time as little sisters tend to do. Joanna just started a new job as a Clinical Liaison for Premier Infusion - her role is to help Premier grow market share in the San Diego area. Brett is a D.O. for Kaiser healthcare.

Ruth and Josh are enjoying little Isla who turns one in February, 2024. Isla is a cutie who is just getting ready to walk. Exciting times! Ruth is working as a dental hygienist. Josh is in micro-business funding

----

We hope you and your family were blessed during 2023. Use this passage to build your faith in the New Year.

Since God, in his mercy, has given us this work to do - this ministry - we should not get discouraged nor lose our motivation.

Never give up! Though our outward, physical bodies are getting older and weaker, our inward spirits are being renewed every day.

For our light, momentary troubles are producing for us a (heavy) fullness of glory, beyond all measure, and an endless blessedness.

So we don’t focus at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.

For the things we see now is temporary, but the things we cannot see are eternal and imperishable.

2 Corinthians 4:1,16-18

Much love, Greg and Martha

2021 in the news

Capitol Hill attack https://abcnews.go.com/US/visual-timeline-attack-capitol-hill-unfolded/story?id=75112066

Mob of 100 people. Grew to 200. Some say 400. Failures include lack of communication between different security organizations, bureaucratic delays in calling in reinforcements, worry over the optics of deploying the National Guard, and an underestimation of the degree of coordination by extremist groups present.
~ Last attack on the Capitol: November 7, 1983 bombing. Goal was to kill GOP members. Susan Rosenberg was charged. She was pardoned by Bill Clinton. She moved on to become an administrator for BLM.

https://reason.com/2021/05/27/americas-semiconductor-industry-doesnt-need-52-billion-in-new-subsidies-to-stay-ahead-of-china/?

It was January 6, and the American Democratic process was being questioned. While attempts were being made to certify the lawful electoral vote in the presidential election, objections were being raised. "The electors were not lawfully certified, especially given the confirmed and illegal activities," said one Congressman. Another Congresswoman brought up faulty voting machines.

But this wasn't January 6 of this year. It was January 6, 2017 - shortly before Donald Trump took office. In total, during that January 6, seven different Democratic members of Congress voiced formal objections to the process, 11 separate times. In fact, Democrats objected to the results in more states in 2017 than Republicans did in 2021.

And then...how about the violence? Well there was massive violence right after the election in November 2016. But shortly after all those objections on January 6, there were hundreds of arrests during "protests" that turned violent on Inauguration Day. Some of the protestors carried Nazi flags and pictures of Hitler.

Every time I turn on cable news I’m told that America is split between those who think Kyle Rittenhouse is a patriot who bravely defended the country against lawlessness and those who think he’s some kind of white supremacist fascist (even though he didn’t shoot any black people). There’s room to believe that both sides have a few facts on their side of the equation. There’s also room—right next to me—to believe that he was an idiot who did something really stupid, but that doesn’t make him a cold-blooded murderer.

It is not necessary to elevate Rittenhouse to hero status, or to agree with his very poor decision to involve himself in the Kenosha riots, to accept that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against him. Rittenhouse is now a free man—not because of white supremacy, or because the criminal justice system failed. Activists, politicians, and media figures who purport to care about civil liberties should work toward empowering other defendants to avail themselves of due process, rather than complain that in this one case, the prosecutors did not get its way.

You can easily pull a few anecdotes to support any position you have from this to flat earth theory if you want. That kind of false equivalency or comparison is a textbook logic error. Bad thinking.  And then to equate any of that to race in the Rittenhouse case  - in which there is NO evidence that race was involved in the shootings - is again grossly illogical. It turns out that murder cases are about evidence. Facts. Not feelings about social issues. Facts. Not narrative. Facts.

Christmas Post - December 2021

Where are the Gardners? No change from 2020 (except Joanna's new house in San Diego). 😊

So what has changed? Covid has changed everything. You know.

One positive. Greg has had a goal (like forever) to play golf once a month. When the Covid lockdown started, the only place open for business were golf courses. So Greg started playing once a week. While meeting people in his foursomes, he met a guy from Ohio, about the same age, named Joe. Over the year, Greg and Joe have played golf almost every week. The impact: Greg has gone from a 18 handicap to 13 - our new backyard golf practice area helps. And Joe has become a family friend. Greg and Joe made it on national TV during the Cubs' visit to San Francisco on May 4th; what we call "our four seconds of fame."

Greg is also going through online training classes to become the Disaster Coordinator for the local HOPE Worldwide chapter - if an agreement with The Salvation Army is ever signed. They are "the big dog" when it comes to Bay Area fire and earthquake coordination. HOPE will provide vetted support workers. More to follow.

In mid-January, Greg and Martha (we) made a trip to Hanover, Pennsylvania to help Martha's mom in her move from a large house in their retirement community into an apartment on campus so Sue (Silcox) could literally walk to all the resources that her community offers. She gave up driving (age 91); her van was donated to niece Becca (and Paul and kids) Leykamm who returned from a few years in Germany due to Paul's work. Becca and Paul now reside in Iowa (lower taxes) while Paul drives into Illinois (huge taxation like California) for work at the Rock Island Arsenal

After the visit to Sue in Hanover, we took advantage of being on the East Coast to stop in Florida and visit Greg's sister Suellen and husband Ray in Venice, FL. Much fun...even some wine and golf!

One interesting event is the Bible Study group that we attend. The group began studying the book of Romans - after studying the books of John and Acts. The goal is to complete the Romans study by the end of 2021. So far, so good. Check out this book if you're curious.

Spring was an exciting time! Ruth and Josh got engaged! In April, we flew down to Orange County (THE OC 😁) to attend their engagement party. Even Martha's mom flew out for the event. We rented a condo one block away from the beach in Newport Beach. It was a wonderful weekend with much of our family! Sue flew back to San Jose with us for a brief visit.

Spring was also vaccination time. Full disclosure: All of our family has at least two Covid shots. No Aaron Rodgers mixed messaging. Go Chicago Bears! 😏 (someday the Bears will beat the Packers - not this year)

We did lose a good family friend to Covid. RIP Chivago Jolly.

Greg turned the big 65 this year. Covid etc limited the celebration. One great present was a round at Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey followed by dinner at Roy's at Pebble Beach. Greg shot his age...and then had a few holes left to go.

In late September, we flew down to SoCal to visit Ruth and Josh, then jumped in a rental car and went down to see Joanna, Brett, and the girls. We even explored North San Diego County as a possible retirement venue. I doubt that will happen, but you never know. We're still young anyway. 😏

In October, we went to San Francisco for a day trip to enjoy the Blue Angels show during Fleet Week and a quick visit to the North End. Perfect weather for the show and outdoor dining at a cafe that reminded us of our visit to Paris in 2018. Greg also got to go to a company outing at the new TopGolf location in San Jose. His team won the company challenge - woohoo!

October was the (re)start of in-person business events. Greg flew to Oklahoma for the state K-12 technology meeting and met with area schools. No surprise - not many masks. Oklahoma people have more freedom (and pay less taxes) than here in California. Greg covers 10 states for WeVideo. He's been there since 2015. That meeting was soon followed by a Superintendent's Summit in San Diego.

A good friend (John Zollar) from Greg's childhood came out for a visit in November. Of course golf was involved as well as a trip to Pebble Beach - and Roy's. Another good friend Cathy Regan lives nearby. John and Cathy went out for another round of golf - and Cathy got a hole in one! Yes, I'm jealous, but also happy for her success. Pray for John's health. Thanks.

We also enjoyed a visit in November from our son-in-law Jesus' family. They live in the San Antonio area. We enjoyed a couple of meals with Caroline, Jesus, Dustin, and the gang. Fun times!

We got an amazing treat in December - a weekend at Pebble Beach with two wonderful couples:  Tonnis and Susan Wildeboer and Mike and Audrey Kearns. We enjoyed two nights, amazing food, and a round on the Spanish Bay course. Greg shot 87 - given that we stop counting at double bogey. Three pars, one birdie - not bad! 👍

Christmas Day at the Gardner's will include the McDonald clan plus Martha's mom who is visiting over the holidays. We love family time!

Kiddo update. Lots happening in April 2022. 😉

The big news for Caroline and Jesus (bottom left hand corner of our card) is that Dustin will have a little sister in April 2022, Lord willing. Very excited times in the McDonald clan. Caroline works for a public accounting firm. Jesus runs his own web marketing business.

As noted above, Joanna and Brett moved from one beautiful home in San Diego to another one. The new home is older with a beautiful view! As with any home, you don't own it. It owns you. After their move-in, plumbing issues are forcing a total plumbing redo. It happens. Their holiday picture choice was from our gathering in the Solvang, CA area in July. They were enjoying their camper van. Martha and Greg took refuge in the Sideways Inn - yep the one from the movie. It's a beautiful rural area noted for wine tasting etc. Joanna works part time as a nurse at an infusion clinic. Brett is a D.O. for Kaiser healthcare.

Ruth (and fiance Josh - top left hand corner of our card) are heading to England for Christmas. Josh grew up near Manchester. Ruth gets to meet more of his family and friends. Josh gets to meet his niece born in 2020 - travel was sticky then. He's a Manchester United fan (yay!). Their wedding date is April 2022. Ruth is working as a dental hygienist. Josh is in micro-business funding

----

We hope you and your family were blessed during 2021...and that you face your trials with faith. God can deliver you from any challenge, but he requires you to be faithful.

1 Corinthians 10:12-13 If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The trials and temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Merry Christmas and we hope your 2022 will be amazing!

Much love, Greg and Martha

P.S. Please pray for Andy, a young man who was hit by an SUV in the crosswalk in front of our home Christmas Eve evening. He's got a long road to recovery ahead. Thanks.

2020 in the news

Insights into year one of COVID...

No proof of voter fraud https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/washington-secrets/nevada-fraud-1-500-dead-voters-42-248-voted-multiple-times-rv-camps-as-homes

The single most important thing for Republicans to address isn’t critical race theory, vaccine mandates, the border, the supply chain cock-up, inflation, or anything having to do with foreign policy. It’s their commitment to a claim that was shot down by every court that looked at it, not to mention Trump’s own attorney general(s).
Trump’s stolen election fantasy is simply and entirely about his own selfish id, his unrestrained narcissism, and his complete lack of concern with anything approaching real issues. It already cost the GOP control of the Senate by losing Georgia. Now Trump proposes losing the whole country if his ego isn’t stroked.

High rent. Blame Hubert Hoover.

Cuomo
~ He also taxed health care worker incomes while helping NY hospitals.

Flynn. Obama withheld evidence given by Comey to set up Trump before his first day in office.
Sally Yates shocked by the process.

While we don’t yet know the full details about the McMichaels’ motives, their actions speak loudly enough. When white men grab guns and mount up to pursue and seize an unarmed black man in the street, they stand in the shoes of lynch mobs past.

Jacob Blake, whose shooting by police kicked off the protests and riots in Kenosha, was not killed. And he wasn’t unarmed: He had a knife.

"Everybody has a plan," former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson famously said, "until they get punched in the mouth." Not only did COVID-19 punch millions of people in the mouth, but government reaction to the virus proved a second blow from which scores of millions of businesses and families have been painfully slow to recover.

In December 2020, Gavin Newsom, California's Democratic governor, banned outdoor dining in regions where available hospital ICU capacity was below 15 percent. A judge opined (accurately) within a week that the policy was "not grounded in science, evidence, or logic." Newsom then rescinded the order seven weeks later without the threshold having been met in most of the state.

De Blasio shut down New York City public schools in November 2020 because the rate of positive tests among all New Yorkers had risen above 3 percent, even though that community spread threshold was far below those recommended by international health authorities, and weekly tests inside school buildings were showing a minuscule positivity rate of 0.18 percent. The mayor removed that consideration for elementary schools 10 days later and for middle schools and high schools four months later. Science!

Christmas Post - December 2020

Hi ya! I assume you got our Christmas postcard and are visiting this page to find out more about our family. Welcome!

Here is a visual of where everybody is in California. So far we are all COVID free.

Martha and I flew out to Pennsylvania in November to help her mother pack for a December move into an independent living apartment at Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover. It will help Sue have access to more people and a variety of resources all under one room. No need to battle ice and snow during the weather. We both felt very safe during our air travel. The airport terminal are SO empty and we had an open middle seat on all legs of our flights. Of course we were armed with KN-95 masks and plenty of wipes and hand sanitizer.

Now that the move has occurred, we may return to Hanover again in January to help Sue unpack and get settled in her new place.

The big news in December is that Ruth and Josh are engaged. We are excited! Josh is a great guy and look forward to having him as a member of our family. No date is set at this time. The wedding may not occur until 2022.

2019 in the news

A collection of thoughts and comments....
